Love and the Sinking Island

*Note: This isn’t written by me. I found this story on an eBook and I thought of sharing it here because it was worth it

Once upon a time, there was an island where all the feelings lived: Happiness, Sadness, Knowledge, and all of the others, including Love.

One day it was announced to the feelings that the island would sink, so all constructed boats and left. Except for Love.

Love was the only one who stayed. Love wanted to hold out until the last possible moment. When the island had almost sunk, Love decided to ask for help.

Richness was passing by Love in a grand boat. Love said, “Richness, can you take me with you?” Richness answered, “No, I can’t. There is a lot of gold and silver in my boat. There is no place here for you.”

Love decided to ask Vanity who was also passing by in a beautiful vessel. “Vanity, please help me!” “I can’t help you, Love.

You are all wet and might damage my boat,” Vanity answered.

Sadness was close by so Love asked, “Sadness, let me go with you.” “Oh . . . Love, I am so sad that I need to be by myself!”

Happiness passed by Love, too, but she was so happy that she did not even hear when Love called her.

Suddenly, there was a voice, “Come, Love, I will take you.” It was an elder. So blessed and overjoyed, Love even forgot to ask the elder where they were going. When they arrived at dry land, the elder went his own way.

Realizing how much was owed the elder, Love asked Knowledge, another elder, “Who Helped me?”

“It was Time,” Knowledge answered.

“Time?” asked Love. “But why did Time help me?” Knowledge smiled with deep wisdom and answered, “Because only Time is capable of understanding how valuable Love is.”

When Lathargy Sets In…

It’s something that we all experience in our lives. We want to achieve something, we get all hyped up and can feel the surge of motivation flowing through our body. Then comes a series of motivational thoughts, research, preparation and so on, and we finally start the process of achieving our goal.

We keep going for a couple of days and then it happens, the lathargy sets in. That toxic feeling of laziness that saps motivation out, then the thoughts start seeping in, those little sneaky bits of excuses to justify our actions, and slowly but surely we give in, we give up, we go back to our old routine!

So How Do We Kill Lathargy?

It’s a simple solution really? Hear your thoughts, the little excuses, and just do what you had originally planned on doing. In simple terms, don’t give a fuck and JUST DO IT!

No matter what your goal is, the moment you give in the first time, it’s more or less game over. So ignore the negativity and keep going. No matter what excuse your mind comes up with, just keep going and once you’re done with your task, you’ll look back and thank yourself for it.

Struggle Now or Struggle Later

I’ve been working on creating short videos for St Pauls Publication, and my usual process of coming up with ideas for motivational videos is by scrounging the  internet to the likes of Pinterest, Facebook or Youtube. Today whilst going through feeds, archives, websites and not what, my mind was at a stand still, no burst of inspiration, no brilliant insight, absolutely nothing.

I started browsing YouTube and put in the keywords ‘Motivation‘ in hopes that I could come up with something remotely inspirational for me to work with, and that’s when I came across one particular video where the speaker talks about how you can either struggle now or struggle later and the choice is purely up to you.

I’ll admit that the reason why I am writing this post right now is so that I can come up with a constructive story for my Inspirational video. I’ve started to realize that writing helps me unlock the creative side of me. Every word that I type write now is not planned and it’s just me jotting down my thoughts in real time. I will publish these thoughts for you to read but that’s just to prove a point that creativity can sometimes come from the most simplest of practices.So here is my basic layout of how the story goes, do note that once the video is created I will embed it in this blog post so that you can see how ideas can form words and words can inspire action and action in turn might get things done.

The layout will be simple – A teenager who has a good voice and is passionate about singing goes around the area signing for small events to earn some cash. He charges Rs.100 for every event he takes part in.

The boy has a beautiful voice and in no standard does his performance deserve a petty amount of Rs. 100. When he just finishes a couple of shows, he tries demanding for Rs.1000 for an event but soon realized that no one was willing to pay him that much.

He said to himself, “Why is no one ready to pay me my worth? I use to sing for free and I have sung for over 10 events now and received a wonderful response, surely I deserve more than this ?”

He had almost decided to quit singing but thought about speaking to his father first. His father looks at him intently and says, “Son, you have only two options in life. You can either struggle now or struggle later, the choice is yours. Work hard now, and build a name for yourself so that you can enjoy the benefits of your hard work comfortably or you may relax now and struggle later, when your time has gone and your energy has left you. The choice will always be yours, so make the best of it”

These wise words of the father inspired the son to focus on working hard and building a reputation for himself rather than how much money he should charge. The name of that son is Sonu Nigam, one of India’s leading playback singers and composers who has won more than 25 awards for his work. So struggle now and reap the benefits, your time is precious so make the best of it.

*I completed the Video and as promised, I have embedded it here. Please let me know if you liked it.

(Do note that the story is made up by me except for the part where Sonu Nigam use to charge Rs.100 for his shows and Sonu Nigam’s father informing him that you can either struggle now or struggle later, I just used those two lines to build the story)

Stop this Shame

Why do you hit her,
Just because she said no;
Why do you shout out,
And call her a whore .

Why did you hurt her,
And leave her to die;
Did you feel any remorse,
Watching her cry.

Why do you kill so many,
In the name of honor and pride;
Do you realize just how many,
Families have died.

It’s time to stop now,
They have suffered a lot;
Treat them as humans,
Or face God’s wrath.

We were meant to love her,
And keep up her name;
At least for God’s sake,
Please stop this shame!

Why I like going to Church

church interior taken 10212013

I am not an avid follower of religious obligations. Born a roman catholic, I was always told since childhood, that I must go for mass every Sunday. And me being the good boy that I was,did what I was told. Whether I paid attention at church or not, did not matter, I had to go for mass or else I would be committing a grave sin.

As I reached my teens however I started questioning this norm. Why should I go for mass every Sunday? I don’t pay attention during mass anyway. If God is everywhere then why should I go to church?….I stopped going to church and chose to relax at home instead. I would always pray to God and have my own private conversation with him however at my own convenience.What I did not realize was that my conversations with God were starting to feel more and more one sided. I started feeling more annoyed then usual; I would get angry quickly with anyone for seemingly pointless reasons. I started to lose myself.

Then it hit me, it was so obvious. The thought came to me while I was watching a movie with my friends; it was more like a question. The voice in my mind asked, “Odell, why have you come to watch a movie in the theatre, cant you watch the same movie at home ?”. The answer I gave my inner voice was a simple one. Watching a movie in the theatre enhances the experience of the movie. I enjoy the movie a lot more because the environment is perfect for watching a movie.Then the same voice whispered, now you finally know why you should go to church.

I immediately knew what I was missing. When I use to pray in church, my connection with God was amplified and enhanced, not because God lives in the church but because it’s a place where a lot of people go to pour their hearts out and speak with God. I believe when so much positive emotion is released in a single place by so many people at one time, that place automatically becomes holy. It’s like a theatre to a movie. Why watch it at home when you can watch the movie on the big screen 😉

This is a picture of my parish church and I just had to share it. I love this place.

The Journey of a Music Entrepreneur : A True Story

We all have dreams. As children, we are so confident about what we want to be and achieve in our lives, however as we grow old we lose confidence in ourselves. Maybe it’s because people start telling us that our dreams are not possible or because of a minor failure or event in our life we stop believing in ourselves.

No matter what the reason ,there are always some people that are truly successful in whatever they do. The difference between them and us are two very simple qualities : belief and dedication

I have had the pleasure of being a friend of such an individual and his journey is testimony to my above lines.

Russell was not the brightest student in class. In fact most teachers would give up on him because he would never seem to pay attention to anything. With a huge effort, he some how managed to finish his 10th Standard (grade) three years later than his peers.

There were times when even his close friends (i included) wondered how would he ever manage in life. We were naive and stupid to undermine and doubt our dear friend. To be honest, Russell is doing better than most of us right now and I am truly inspired by him.

He met the love of his life when he was just 14 years and he has never left his love since then. I remember him purchasing his guitar and I thought to myself what a waste of money, he will never be able to learn the chords forget playing an entire song. Oh how wrong I was.

Russell right now not only plays the guitar but also teaches students how to play. With the guidance of his good friend Zack, who is the owner of “Rock n Blues Music Academy”, they have a goal of teaching people music all over Mumbai.

Russell has worked hard to make his dreams a reality. I must say though that if Russell is the master of music, Zack is the legend. Together with their band of very capable music teachers, they are unstoppable.Right now they already teach half of Mumbai in the musical arts.

What sets them apart from other tutors is not only their expertise in music but also their humble and patient attitude. If you want to learn from an expert but you feel that you want to connect with your teacher on a more personal level, then these are the guys you must contact. You can email Zack at

You can check out their awesome video here –

I hope to turn my dreams into a reality just as Zack and Russell have turned theirs. As Abraham Lincoln had rightly said ” Success is going from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm”  🙂

All of us go through some sort of struggle in our life. It could be a heartache from your loved one or you have lost someone in your life that was close to you or you’re just lonely.

How does a person cope in these situations. Sometimes that loneliness might feel like the end of the world. Those days may just seem impossible.

There are a few techniques that if done with conviction, can really help you get over those blues.

1.) OBSERVE : Start observing yourself from an outsiders perspective. When you do this, you will not feel emotionally connected to those negative thoughts in your mind and once you start paying attention to your thoughts you will notice that the voices in your head suddenly go silent. Try it right now and see if it works.

2.) HAPPY TASK :Once you have done step 1. Immediately do something that you enjoy. I usually go on YouTube and watch a funny video or play video games or go for a jog. Basically you can do anything that would completely take you off that morbid zone.

3.) EXERCISE : Do a little exercise or yoga.
I personally do a little bit of both and believe me it will change your life. In fact, you can try doing a few yoga poses for beginners. I practice yoga by following a YouTube video that I had downloaded however that’s just me. For those who have no experience in it, please consult a physician before you try any of the poses
Here’s the video

4.) Grateful Dairy: Last step is to write down something that you are grateful for everyday in a book, either at the start or at the end of the day.
I usually write really silly things like, thank you God for the sky or the birds. I make a note of at least five things I am grateful for every day.
It will change the way you look at things during the day once it becomes a habit.

I know these steps seem really simple however sometimes the most complicated problems in life are solved with the most simplest of solutions.
Besides you have nothing to lose, so why not give it a shot.

I hope these techniques help you as much as it has helped me in my life 🙂
